Suspected H-E-B shoplifter shot and killed after allegedly stabbing officer

September 4, 2020

A suspected shoplifter was shot and killed Friday afternoon after allegedly stabbing an SAPD officer in the face, officials said.

The man, who was approximately 45 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers were called to the H-E-B at 2118 Fredericksburg Road at 2:37 p.m. after store security detained the suspect who was accused of shoplifting, said SAPD Chief William McManus.

An off-duty Floresville police officer, who was working security at the grocery store, turned the suspect over to the police, McManus said.

The suspect was standing near the police car’s hood, going through some things in his backpack, and stepped out of view of the officer’s dashboard camera.

A second later, he came back “very aggressively, very quickly,” and allegedly stabbed the SAPD officer once in the face with knife that had an approximately 5-inch blade, McManus said.

“It was a vicious attack,” McManus said after watching the footage from the police dash camera.

The suspect then continued to fight with the officers, and multiple shots were fired by the officers.

The officer was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center and is in serious condition, McManus said, and was reportedly passing out on the way to the hospital due to loss of blood.

A security guard for H-E-B was also transported to a hospital out of an abundance of caution, said H-E-B spokeswoman Dya Campos.

The H-E-B closed down for the night after the incident, but will be open again in the morning at 6 a.m.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
