It’s early evening when Councilwoman Jada Andrews-Sullivan and I connect by phone. It’s been a long day of meetings for her, but she maintains her positive, energetic attitude.

“I’m a firm believer that God pushes you in a place, and this is where I need to be,” she says with pastoral buoyancy.”

That place is in a runoff for the District 2 seat on San Antonio City Council against political newcomer Jalen McKee-Rodriguez. Like the other four council runoffs being decided Saturday, this contest promises to be an absolute nail-biter.

Andrews-Sullivan’s bid to win a second term on San Antonio City Council has gained citywide attention. If she prevails, she would become the first District 2 council member to win re-election in eight years.

“We always ask, ‘Why do the other districts have more than District 2?’ That’s because they kept consistency in the seat,” she says adamantly.

Putting an end to D2’s revolving door has been the hope of many residents of the district, which covers a large part of the East and Northeast Sides. Some feel the absence of a lasting leader has kept D2 from completing long-term projects. 

“Consistency is the key to getting anything done,” she says. “If we keep starting over, we’ll never be finished.”

The person standing in her way is 26-year-old Jalen McKee-Rodriguez, her former employee who, on May 1, won the most votes in a 12-way split. 

Of the 8,571 votes cast in the D2 contest, McKee-Rodriguez came in first with 2,259 votes. Andrews-Sullivan came in second with 1,439 votes, confirming rumors of her political…
