Texas Governor Greg Abbott went head-to-head with Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke in the one-and-only debate planned ahead of the November 8 election. The debate took place on Friday, September 30, at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg near the United States-Mexico border.

According to media at the debate, O’Rourke was the only participant to remain and speak with press following the debate. KXAN, who hosted the debate, held a pre-and-post poll with a focus group. The pre-debate poll answers had 40% for Abbott, 27% for O’Rourke, and 33% undecided. The post-debate poll results were 50% for O’Rourke, 43% for Abbott and 7% undecided.

Abbott agreed to a single debate on the condition that there would be no live audience in the theater. The decision has been the subject of widespread scrutiny.
