Eight Men Indicted in Alleged White House Attack Plot
Federal authorities have announced that eight men were indicted in connection with an alleged plan to attack the UFC Freedom 250 event held at the White House in June.
The Justice Department said the alleged conspiracy involved plans to use drones and sniper fire to kill government officials and other people attending the event. According to the department, an eighth alleged participant, who was expected to serve as a sniper, was arrested by the FBI in West Virginia this week.
The defendants face charges that include conspiracy to commit murder and terrorism-related offenses. Court documents had not made clear how close the suspects allegedly came to carrying out the attack before authorities intervened.
The charges are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Powerful Heat Dome Expected to Cover Much of the Country
Millions of Americans are also being warned to prepare for an extended and potentially dangerous heat wave beginning this weekend.
Meteorologists expect a massive area of high pressure to settle over the Northern Plains before expanding across as much as two-thirds of the continental United States. Temperatures in many locations could climb 15 to 25 degrees above normal, including during overnight hours.
More than 90 local temperature records could be tied or broken through Wednesday. Many of those records involve unusually warm nighttime temperatures, which are especially dangerous because the human body has less opportunity to recover from daytime heat.
Triple-digit temperatures are expected across parts of Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and the Dakotas. Record nighttime warmth could also affect communities stretching from Texas and Florida to the Carolinas.
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is identifying an elevated risk of extreme heat across portions of the Plains, Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Southeast during the coming week.
The prolonged heat could increase electricity demand, worsen drought conditions and elevate wildfire risks. Older adults, outdoor workers, young children and people without dependable air conditioning will face the greatest danger.
Justice Department Challenges Maryland Immigration Policies
The Trump administration has opened another major legal confrontation over immigration enforcement.
The Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Maryland and state Attorney General Anthony Brown, arguing that Maryland’s sanctuary policies interfere with federal immigration operations. The department contends that certain state laws limit cooperation between local correctional facilities and federal immigration authorities.
Maryland’s attorney general’s office declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.
The lawsuit is part of a broader campaign targeting Democratic-led states and cities that restrict how local law-enforcement agencies assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Supporters of the administration’s approach argue that local governments should cooperate fully with federal deportation efforts. Civil-rights organizations and immigration advocates counter that aggressive enforcement can undermine due-process protections, discourage cooperation with police and increase the risk of racial profiling.
The Maryland case could become another important test of the balance between federal immigration authority and state control over local law enforcement.
Affordable Care Act Premiums Could Rise Again
Healthcare affordability is also emerging as a significant economic and political issue.
An analysis of preliminary insurance filings found that Affordable Care Act insurers are proposing a median premium increase of 14% for 2027. The review covers 77 insurers operating across 16 states and Washington, D.C.
The proposed increase would follow a median premium jump of approximately 20% in 2026.
Insurers have cited higher medical expenses, federal regulatory changes and the expiration of enhanced pandemic-era subsidies. Many middle-income families who do not qualify for substantial financial assistance could experience the greatest impact.
The proposed rates are not final and will be reviewed by state regulators later this summer. However, the early filings suggest that healthcare expenses will remain a serious concern heading into the midterm election season.
