MLB’s Power Map Takes Shape as Dodgers, Brewers and Rays Lead the Charge
Los Angeles owns baseball’s best record, Milwaukee is controlling the NL Central, Tampa Bay leads the American League, and several surging clubs are changing the playoff conversation before the All-Star break.

Major League Baseball has reached one of its most revealing points of the season.
The All-Star break is approaching, contenders are beginning to separate themselves from the pack, and teams that struggled earlier in the year are making one last push before the trade deadline forces front offices to choose a direction.
At the top, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers have established themselves as the strongest teams in baseball. The Tampa Bay Rays lead the American League, while the Atlanta Braves continue to control a suddenly competitive National League East.
Behind them, the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Miami Marlins and Chicago Cubs remain positioned to turn the second half into a crowded postseason fight.
Dodgers Hold Baseball’s Best Record
The defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers enter Friday with an MLB-best 61-33 record.
Los Angeles has built a 14-game advantage in the National League West, the largest divisional lead in baseball. Arizona and San Diego are tied for second at 46-47, leaving the Dodgers with enough separation to focus more on health, pitching alignment and October preparation than the daily division race.
The Dodgers’ success is reflected in their All-Star representation. Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, Andy Pages and Yoshinobu Yamamoto were selected for the National League roster, giving Los Angeles five representatives. Four Dodgers were named starters, tying a franchise record.
Ohtani remains at the center of the baseball universe. He was the leading vote-getter in the National League and will start at designated hitter during Tuesday’s All-Star Game.
However, he is unlikely to pitch in the Midsummer Classic. The Dodgers expected him to make his final first-half pitching appearance Friday against Arizona, leaving insufficient rest before the All-Star Game on July 14.
Los Angeles possesses baseball’s deepest collection of star power, but its real advantage may be breathing room. While other contenders are playing tense divisional games every night, the Dodgers have created a wide enough cushion to manage workloads strategically.
Brewers Quietly Building a Serious Contender
The Milwaukee Brewers have not attracted the same national spotlight as the Dodgers, but their 59-34 record is the second-best mark in the majors.
Milwaukee leads the Chicago Cubs by seven games in the National League Central. The Brewers have combined strong pitching, lineup balance and consistent play within their division to build one of baseball’s most complete first halves.
MLB’s recent power rankings placed Milwaukee directly behind Los Angeles and highlighted the Brewers’ success against NL Central opponents. That ability to consistently defeat divisional competition has allowed Milwaukee to create separation despite the Central being competitive from top to bottom.
The Brewers may lack the celebrity density of Los Angeles, but they are no longer operating as an under-the-radar surprise. Their record makes them a legitimate National League championship threat.
The question entering the second half is whether Milwaukee will make an aggressive trade-deadline move. A significant addition could turn an already strong roster into a postseason machine.
Rays Own the American League’s Best Record
The Tampa Bay Rays lead the American League at 54-37, four games ahead of the New York Yankees in the AL East.
Tampa Bay’s rise has been powered by the organization’s familiar combination of player development, flexibility and timely power. Junior Caminero has been one of the league’s most dangerous young hitters, including a recent stretch in which he homered in five consecutive games as the Rays won six straight.
The Rays did suffer a loud defeat Thursday, falling 12-4 to the Yankees as Ben Rice hit two home runs and drove in five runs. New York’s victory allowed the Yankees to split the four-game series rather than lose additional ground in the division.
That result showed why the AL East race is not finished. Tampa Bay has the better record, but New York still has enough offensive power to make the division uncomfortable during the second half.
The Rays remain in the stronger position. They have established the league’s best record and demonstrated that their offense can win games without relying on one superstar.
Braves Lead a Crowded NL East
The Atlanta Braves enter Friday at 54-38, holding a three-game lead over both the Philadelphia Phillies and Miami Marlins.
Atlanta has one of baseball’s strongest rosters, but the divisional picture is becoming increasingly complicated. Philadelphia and Miami are both 52-42, meaning the Braves have little room for an extended slump.
The Braves recently experienced an offensive slowdown, scoring fewer than three runs per game over a 15-game stretch noted in MLB’s June 28 power rankings. Despite that decline, Atlanta continued to hold the division lead.
The Braves are also sending a strong group to Philadelphia for the All-Star Game. Their selections include Matt Olson and veteran pitcher Chris Sale, who earned the 10th All-Star appearance of his career.
Atlanta’s challenge is no longer simply staying ahead of Philadelphia. Miami has forced its way into the conversation.
Marlins Becoming Baseball’s Most Dangerous Climber
The Miami Marlins may be the most surprising contender in the standings.
Miami has won six consecutive games and improved to 52-42 after defeating Seattle 8-4 Thursday. The Marlins entered the previous game with an MLB-best 25-8 record since June 1, transforming themselves from an interesting young team into a legitimate threat in the National League East.
Their recent run has been driven by strong pitching and an offense that continues finding different ways to score. Otto Lopez has emerged as one of the league’s leading hitters, while Miami’s young rotation has shown the ability to control games.
The Marlins are tied with Philadelphia and only three games behind Atlanta. That creates a fascinating second-half situation: the Braves remain the division leader, the Phillies possess an expensive veteran roster, and Miami enters the break with the strongest recent momentum.
Baseball’s standings can turn quickly, and the Marlins are currently carrying a lit match through a room full of preseason predictions.
Yankees Remain Within Striking Distance
The Yankees are 51-42 and sit four games behind Tampa Bay.
New York has dealt with injuries and periods of offensive inconsistency, but Thursday’s 12-run performance against the Rays provided a reminder of the lineup’s ceiling. Rice’s two-homer game helped the Yankees avoid losing the series and prevented Tampa Bay from stretching its lead further.
The Yankees remain comfortably above .500, but the second half will demand greater consistency. They are chasing a Rays team that rarely beats itself, and the AL wild-card field could become crowded if clubs such as Cleveland, Texas, Seattle and Minnesota begin building momentum.
New York does not need to reinvent its season. It needs to stop allowing short slumps to become long stretches of missed opportunity.
American League Central and West Remain Wide Open
While several National League leaders have created separation, two American League divisions remain unsettled.
The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians are separated by only percentage points in the AL Central. Chicago is 47-45, while Cleveland is 48-46. Minnesota remains close enough at 46-48 to make the division a three-team contest.
The AL West is even tighter. Texas leads at 47-46, followed by Seattle at 47-47 and Houston at 46-49.
None of those teams has created a dependable cushion. A strong two-week stretch could produce a division leader. A poor road trip could drop that same team into fourth place.
These races will place additional pressure on front offices before the trade deadline. Almost every club in the Central and West can make a reasonable argument for buying, but none has played well enough to ignore its weaknesses.
Other Teams Heating Up
Several clubs outside the leading tier are entering the break with encouraging momentum.
Detroit completed a sweep of the Athletics and won its fifth consecutive game behind Framber Valdez, who allowed one run and struck out nine over seven innings. The Tigers remain below .500 at 43-50, but the streak has given the club a pulse in the AL Central.
Boston has also reentered the wild-card discussion. The Red Sox have won six straight and 11 of their last 13, improving to 43-48 after Patrick Sandoval delivered an effective return from injury.
Both clubs still have work ahead. A hot week does not erase three months of inconsistency, but it can influence whether management trades veterans or adds support for a late-season run.
All-Star Week Arrives in Philadelphia
The regular-season schedule now gives way to All-Star festivities in Philadelphia.
MLB All-Star Week runs from Friday, July 10, through Tuesday, July 14, with events taking place at Citizens Bank Park and around the city. The schedule includes the HBCU Swingman Classic, the MLB Draft, the Home Run Derby and the 96th MLB All-Star Game.
The All-Star Game is scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, at 8 p.m. Eastern.
The break will offer teams a chance to reset, but it also represents a line of demarcation. The first half was about identifying strengths and weaknesses. The weeks that follow will be about acting on them.
The Second-Half Picture
The Dodgers remain baseball’s standard. The Brewers have earned recognition as their closest statistical challenger. The Rays lead the American League, and the Braves continue holding off two dangerous teams in the East.
But the standings below those leaders resemble rush-hour traffic.
The Yankees are still close. The Phillies have enough talent to surge. The Marlins are already surging. The Cubs remain a serious wild-card contender, while nearly the entire AL Central and AL West can still imagine playing postseason baseball.
The first half has identified the favorites.
The second half will reveal which teams are built to survive pressure, injuries, deadline decisions and the long road toward October.
