The preseason is finished. Now the NFL gets serious.

All 32 teams face one of the most difficult personnel decisions of the year Sunday as rosters must be reduced to 53 players, while trades, releases and last-minute depth-chart changes continue across the league.

From a new offensive tackle arriving in Dallas to Jacksonville adding quarterback insurance and Chicago ending its preseason with an explosive performance, the final hours before roster cutdown are already producing plenty of movement.

NFL Teams Face 53-Man Roster Deadline

The biggest story across the NFL today is simple: decision day has arrived.

Teams must reduce their active rosters to a maximum of 53 players by 6 p.m. ET Sunday, August 30, according to the NFL's official league calendar.

Several teams began making significant cuts before the deadline.

Buffalo is releasing veteran wide receiver and return specialist Mecole Hardman Jr., along with punter Mitch Wishnowsky. Rookie Tommy Doman Jr. emerged from camp as Buffalo's preferred option at punter.

Miami has also started clearing its roster, while Tampa Bay has released several players as teams position themselves for the final 53.

The movement won't necessarily stop when the deadline passes. Players released Sunday can become waiver claims or free-agent additions elsewhere, and teams will quickly begin assembling practice squads.

Late August is where one team's roster casualty can suddenly become another team's Week 1 solution.

Cowboys Trade for Broderick Jones

The Dallas Cowboys made one of the weekend's most notable moves, acquiring offensive tackle Broderick Jones from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Pittsburgh is sending Jones and a 2027 fourth-round pick to Dallas in exchange for 2027 third- and sixth-round selections, according to ESPN and Reuters reports.

Jones entered the NFL as Pittsburgh's first-round selection in 2023 and has experience playing both tackle positions.

For Dallas, the trade adds another former first-rounder to an offensive line already containing significant young talent.

The Cowboys now have another option opposite Tyler Guyton, with Terence Steele also in the tackle mix.

More importantly, the timing tells us something: Dallas isn't simply treating the 53-man deadline as an exercise in cutting players. The Cowboys are actively trying to improve before Week 1.

And their opener won't exactly provide a gentle introduction.

Dallas travels to face the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football on September 13.

Jaguars Acquire Quinn Ewers From Miami

Jacksonville also entered the trade market.

The Jaguars acquired quarterback Quinn Ewers from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2028 sixth-round draft pick.

Ewers, a seventh-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, started three games for Miami last season and completed his rookie campaign with 622 passing yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

He now heads to Jacksonville as another quarterback option behind Trevor Lawrence.

The move gives the Jaguars additional insurance at one of the game's most important positions while creating more questions about how Jacksonville will configure its quarterback room around Lawrence.

Miami, meanwhile, moves forward with Malik Willis atop its quarterback depth chart, with Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski also in the room following the trade.

It's exactly the kind of transaction that becomes common around cutdown weekend: rather than risk losing a player for nothing, teams try to turn roster decisions into draft capital.

Bears Finish Preseason With a Bang

Chicago may have found one of the final weekend's most memorable preseason plays.

Backup quarterback Tyson Bagent completed 16 of 17 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns as the Bears defeated the Tennessee Titans 24-15 Saturday night.

And Chicago didn't exactly ease into the game.

Bagent connected with rookie receiver Zavion Thomas for a 97-yard touchdown on the Bears' first offensive play.

Thomas finished with five catches for 140 yards and also contributed a 39-yard punt return.

Preseason statistics have to be treated carefully. Coaches are evaluating players, starters are often resting and schemes are intentionally limited.

But performances like that can matter enormously for players fighting for roster spots.

Thomas, a third-round rookie, gave Chicago another reason to think about how his speed and versatility might translate once the games begin counting.

Giants and Patriots Add Depth Through Trades

The Cowboys and Jaguars weren't the only teams dealing.

The New York Giants acquired defensive tackle C.J. Okoye from Baltimore for a 2028 seventh-round pick.

Okoye previously developed through the NFL's International Player Pathway program and appeared in 13 games for Baltimore last season. The move also reunites him with Giants head coach John Harbaugh.

New England also added to its backfield, acquiring running back Corey Kiner from Arizona for a 2028 seventh-round pick.

Kiner joins a Patriots running back group led by Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson.

None of these moves will generate blockbuster-trade graphics on television all week.

But this is often how NFL rosters are built around the edges. A seventh-round pick here, a backup running back there, an extra defensive lineman somewhere else.

Then somebody gets injured in November and suddenly the quiet August acquisition is playing 40 snaps.

George Kittle's Return Gives the 49ers Encouraging News

San Francisco received an important boost before the roster deadline when star tight end George Kittle was activated from the physically unable to perform list.

Kittle has been recovering from the torn Achilles he suffered during last season's playoffs.

Because San Francisco activated him before the roster cutdown, Kittle remains eligible to play at the beginning of the regular season rather than being required to miss the opening stretch.

That's especially important considering where the 49ers are headed.

San Francisco opens its season against the Los Angeles Rams on September 10 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia, the first NFL regular-season game in Melbourne.

Lions Monitoring Isiah Pacheco

Detroit has a less certain injury situation.

Running back Isiah Pacheco has been dealing with a back problem after previously recovering from an MCL sprain.

Lions coach Dan Campbell indicated the knee was no longer the primary concern, but the back issue has complicated Pacheco's recovery.

Detroit also recently met with veteran free-agent running back Kareem Hunt, potentially giving the Lions another option if additional depth becomes necessary.

With Jahmyr Gibbs leading Detroit's backfield, Pacheco isn't expected to carry the offense, but his physical running style could give the Lions another dimension if healthy.

Week 1 Is Getting Close

Once Sunday's roster deadline passes, the transition becomes official.

Preseason speculation ends.

Regular-season preparation begins.

And the NFL isn't exactly easing fans back into football.

The defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks host the New England Patriots on Wednesday, September 9, in a rematch of Super Bowl LX.

One night later, the 49ers and Rams meet in Melbourne, Australia.

Sunday Night Football brings Dallas at the New York Giants, and opening week concludes with Denver visiting Kansas City on Monday Night Football September 14.

The Patriots-Seahawks matchup is particularly fascinating because neither Drake Maye nor Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold played during the preseason. The opener will immediately test whether protecting established starters created freshness or a little early-season rust.

What Happens Next

The next several days could be every bit as interesting as Sunday's cuts.

Teams will scan the waiver wire.

Veterans who were released could quickly sign elsewhere.

Practice squads will begin forming.

Coaches will finalize depth charts.

And contenders who believe they're one player short may discover that another team just released exactly what they need.

That's why roster-cut weekend is one of the most fascinating parts of the NFL calendar.

The preseason scoreboard disappears quickly.

The roster decisions don't.

By this time next week, the conversation will have changed completely.

Instead of asking who made the team, we'll be asking a much better question:

Who is ready to win?
