NFL Training Camp News: Travis Hunter Breaks Out as Preseason Football Returns

By I Am Refocused Radio Sports
Monday, August 3, 2026

Football has officially moved from offseason speculation to on-field evaluation.

All 32 NFL teams participated in the league’s Back Together Weekend, providing the first broad look at returning stars, major injury recoveries, new coaching systems and rookies attempting to win immediate roles.

The early headlines include a healthy Travis Hunter making plays on offense and defense, New York Jets rookie David Bailey repeatedly reaching the backfield, Jahmyr Gibbs remaining out of Detroit Lions practices during contract negotiations and the San Francisco 49ers losing wide receiver Ricky Pearsall for the season.

The preseason begins Thursday, August 6, when the Arizona Cardinals meet the Carolina Panthers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.

Travis Hunter Produces His Best Practice as a Professional

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback and wide receiver Travis Hunter generated one of the strongest performances of Back Together Weekend.

Hunter intercepted a pass during Sunday’s practice and followed it three plays later with a twisting 35-yard reception. NFL.com reported that observers considered it one of the best practices of his young professional career.

The performance was particularly important because Hunter is returning from the knee injury that ended his 2025 season.

Jacksonville continues to divide his practice workload between defense and offense. Hunter participated in 17 total 11-on-11 snaps Sunday, with 10 coming on defense and seven on offense. Through that point in camp, he had logged 34 defensive snaps and 22 offensive snaps.

The Jaguars appear committed to using Hunter as more than an occasional two-way attraction. The real question is whether they can manage his workload while still allowing his unusual skill set to influence games on both sides of the ball.

Why Hunter Is Someone to Watch

Hunter does not need to become a full-time starter at two positions to transform Jacksonville.

A meaningful defensive role combined with a carefully designed package of offensive snaps could force opponents to prepare for several different versions of the Jaguars. His health and weekly snap distribution will be among the league’s most interesting tactical stories throughout August.

Jahmyr Gibbs’ Contract Situation Hangs Over Lions Camp

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has been present at camp but has not participated in practices.

The Lions have described Gibbs as dealing with a minor back issue, while NFL Network has reported that the running back is seeking a major contract extension. Negotiations are continuing, and no significant hostility between the sides has been publicly reported.

Gibbs is part of a larger running-back market story. Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson and Indianapolis’ Jonathan Taylor are also positioned for new contracts, creating a race to determine which player could reset the financial ceiling at the position.

Detroit must balance two priorities: protecting one of its most explosive offensive players and preparing the offense in case negotiations extend deeper into the preseason.

Why Gibbs Is Someone to Watch

The important signal will not be another statement from an agent or team executive. It will be Gibbs returning to full practice.

Until then, every missed session limits Detroit’s opportunity to install new concepts and evaluate the complete offense.

Jets Rookie David Bailey Is Already Disrupting Practices

David Bailey, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, has made an immediate impression during New York Jets camp.

The former Texas Tech edge rusher was credited with three practice sacks during the Jets’ second camp session. One came when he powered through right tackle Armand Membou before passing running back Breece Hall on his way toward quarterback Geno Smith.

Bailey’s teammates have praised his ability to defend the run and pressure quarterbacks. The rookie has said he is studying pass rushers including Von Miller, Aidan Hutchinson and Myles Garrett while developing techniques that fit his own physical strengths.

Practice sacks are not official statistics, and quarterbacks cannot be contacted. Even so, repeatedly winning against NFL blockers this early in camp is a meaningful beginning.

Why Bailey Is Someone to Watch

The Jets need Bailey to become more than a promising rookie.

New York selected him second overall to become a foundational defensive player. His first preseason appearances will reveal whether his practice speed and power carry over when blockers are allowed to finish plays.

Ricky Pearsall Will Miss the 2026 Season

The San Francisco 49ers suffered one of training camp’s most significant early losses when general manager John Lynch announced that wide receiver Ricky Pearsall would undergo knee surgery.

Pearsall has been placed on injured reserve and will miss the entire 2026 season.

His absence creates an immediate problem for the 49ers’ passing game. San Francisco must replace not only Pearsall’s projected production but also the speed, route flexibility and lineup options he could have provided.

The injury also increases the importance of every remaining receiver competing for snaps. Training camp evaluations in San Francisco now carry regular-season consequences.

Ashton Jeanty Begins His Second Season With Something to Prove

Las Vegas Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty entered the NFL with enormous expectations after his historic college career at Boise State.

His 2025 rookie season was more difficult. Jeanty finished only 25 yards short of 1,000 despite playing behind an offensive line that struggled to create space before contact.

The Raiders responded by investing heavily in their offensive front. Las Vegas signed three-time Pro Bowl center Tyler Linderbaum and added guard Spencer Burford, while left tackle Kolton Miller is returning from an ankle injury.

New coach Klint Kubiak has indicated that Jeanty will be given the opportunity to serve as the Raiders’ primary running back.

Why Jeanty Is Someone to Watch

Jeanty’s second season will help answer whether his rookie struggles were primarily caused by the offensive line or whether he also needs to adapt his own game.

A more functional blocking unit should allow the Raiders to use his vision, acceleration and contact balance instead of repeatedly asking him to create yards from broken plays.

This is the kind of season that can change a young player’s reputation quickly.

Bo Nix Is Moving Freely After Ankle Surgeries

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has returned to full work after undergoing surgeries on his right ankle.

Reports from Denver’s camp indicate that Nix has looked comfortable in the pocket and has connected on several deeper throws under new play-caller Davis Webb. Nix has also said he does not intend to remove mobility from his game because of the injury.

That mobility has been an important part of his effectiveness through his first two NFL seasons. Denver will have to find the line between allowing Nix to play naturally and limiting unnecessary preseason contact.

Why Nix Is Someone to Watch

Nix is entering the stage when a promising young quarterback is expected to become a consistent franchise leader.

His arm strength, movement and familiarity with Denver’s offense give him the tools. The next step is producing explosive plays without increasing turnovers or exposing himself to avoidable hits.

Cowboys Begin Their First Padded Practice

The Dallas Cowboys hold their first padded practice Monday at 11:45 a.m. Pacific in Oxnard, California.

The session should provide a clearer evaluation of the offensive and defensive lines, the running-back rotation and a defense attempting to recover from a difficult 2025 season.

Dallas enters camp with no players beginning on the physically unable to perform or non-football injury lists. Defensive backs DaRon Bland and Donovan Ezeiruaku are practicing, although the Cowboys planned to manage their workloads during the opening portion of camp.

Wide receiver George Pickens is also participating despite playing the season under a one-year franchise tag worth $27.1 million. Pickens is coming off a career-best 2025 season in which he recorded 93 receptions, 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns.

Cowboys Players to Watch

Caleb Downs: The first-round safety enters Dallas with enormous expectations. The Cowboys need him to become an immediate playmaker in a rebuilt defense.

Jaishawn Barham: The rookie linebacker earned early praise for his physical hands and ability to play both on and off the line of scrimmage. Padded practices will provide a much stronger test of that versatility.

DeMarvion Overshown: The linebacker successfully handled a planned communication test when coaches simulated a headset malfunction. His command of the defense will be increasingly important as Dallas installs a new system.

George Pickens: Dallas already knows he can produce. The larger question is how the offense distributes opportunities between Pickens, CeeDee Lamb and the team’s running backs.

Steelers Change Their Training-Camp Approach

Mike McCarthy’s first training camp as Pittsburgh Steelers head coach will be physical, but it will not include live tackling during practices.

Defenders will be instructed to wrap up ball carriers without taking them to the ground. McCarthy described the policy as a risk-management decision and said the team can use video, GPS information and technical drills to sharpen tackling without increasing unnecessary contact.

The approach represents a visible departure from the training-camp culture associated with former coach Mike Tomlin.

It may preserve player health, but Pittsburgh will still have to demonstrate that reduced practice tackling does not produce poor angles or missed tackles when games begin.

Hall of Fame Game Opens the Preseason

The Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals will play Thursday, August 6, in Canton, Ohio.

The game will also help launch a Hall of Fame weekend honoring the Class of 2026: Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Roger Craig, Luke Kuechly and Adam Vinatieri. The inductees are scheduled to be recognized during pregame activities.

Arizona enters a new era under first-year coach Mike LaFleur. The Cardinals are installing a new offense while evaluating quarterback Jacoby Brissett, rookie running back Jeremiyah Love, receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and several defensive players returning from injuries.

Carolina enters camp as the defending NFC South champion after finishing 8-9 in 2025. The Panthers’ major questions include Bryce Young’s continued development, Tetairoa McMillan’s progression after his rookie season and the integration of defensive additions Jaelan Phillips and Devin Lloyd.

Who to Watch Thursday

Marvin Harrison Jr., Cardinals: Harrison is healthy after dealing with appendicitis and foot problems last season. Arizona wants him to develop into a consistent featured receiver in LaFleur’s offense.

Jeremiyah Love, Cardinals: The first-round running back joins a crowded backfield but has the talent to earn an immediate role.

Arizona’s offensive line: Rookie Chase Bisontis is competing at right guard, while the Cardinals have new starters or competitions at several positions. The Hall of Fame Game will offer an early look at whether the group is beginning to function together.

Carolina’s young depth: Established starters may play limited snaps or remain out entirely. That creates extended opportunities for young receivers, defensive backs and offensive linemen competing for roster positions.

What to Watch Next

The first full week of padded practices will begin separating legitimate breakouts from helmet-and-shorts highlights.

Watch for Travis Hunter’s workload, Jahmyr Gibbs’ participation status, David Bailey’s performance against live blocking, Bo Nix’s movement outside the pocket and the Cowboys’ defensive response when practices become more physical.

Thursday’s Hall of Fame Game will not answer which team is ready to contend. Preseason openers rarely do.

It will begin answering a different set of questions: Which rookies look comfortable? Which backup quarterback controls the offense? Which offensive lines communicate properly? Which unheralded players force coaches to reconsider the depth chart?

Those are the August questions that quietly shape September.

Refocused Perspective

Training camp creates instant stars every summer. A player makes one spectacular catch, records a practice sack or wins a one-on-one drill, and the hype machine begins revving like somebody left a sports car running in the parking lot.

The smartest evaluation requires patience.

One good practice deserves attention, not a gold jacket. One poor rep does not end a career. The players worth following are the ones who repeat strong performances when the pads come on, the playbook expands and opponents begin hitting back.

August is not about crowning champions.

It is about discovering who is truly ready.
