Forecasters are warning that temperatures will climb toward 100 degrees during the coming week, increasing health risks for outdoor workers, older residents, young children and people without dependable air conditioning. The warning follows flooding that disrupted parts of Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland and reportedly resulted in one death on Saturday.
At the same time, local organizations are helping families prepare for the new school year through backpack giveaways, low-cost haircuts, health services and supply drives. Sunday also marks the final day of San Antonio Animal Care Services’ “Empty the Shelters” adoption campaign, an effort intended to reduce crowding at the city shelter.
These stories may appear separate, but they share one thread: how effectively a city protects and supports people during periods of pressure.
Heat Expected to Intensify Across San Antonio
The National Weather Service’s Austin-San Antonio office said Sunday morning that hot and mostly dry weather is expected through the end of July.
San Antonio was forecast to reach approximately 96 degrees Sunday, with the heat index potentially climbing to 103 degrees. Monday’s high was forecast near 98, followed by highs around 99 Tuesday and Wednesday, 100 Thursday and 101 Friday.

San Antonio Express-News meteorologist Anthony Franze reported Sunday that a strong high-pressure system is expected to strengthen over Texas throughout the week. The pattern could keep San Antonio largely dry while producing afternoon heat-index readings between approximately 102 and 105 degrees from Wednesday through Friday.
Long-range forecasts show a limited possibility of scattered rain around August 2 or 3, but the probability remains low and could change as new forecasting data becomes available.

One Person Reported Dead Following Flooding at JBSA-Lackland
KENS 5 reported that one person was found dead Saturday, July 25, after flash flooding trapped a vehicle on Hall Street at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.
Emergency crews responded during a period of heavy rain and flooding. The report was published after the incident occurred Saturday.
Joint Base San Antonio also issued public notices concerning flooding at the Hall Street and Kelly Street bridges and directed drivers to use alternate routes.
As of Sunday morning, publicly available information did not establish every circumstance surrounding the death. The identity of the person and a full official account of how the vehicle became trapped had not been included in the sources reviewed for this article.

Texas Public Radio and the San Antonio Report published a regional resource roundup on July 17, identifying events scheduled from late July through August. The individual distributions are occurring on separate dates.
A Back-to-School Bash is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 26, at the Brooks Business Center, 8114 City-Base Landing.
Organizers advertised local vendors, food trucks, music, $10 haircuts and free backpacks containing school supplies while quantities last. Children must be present to receive a backpack.

The event is expected to include backpacks, health information, community resources, food and music. Students must be entering kindergarten through 12th grade and must obtain an event wristband to receive a backpack.
Joint Base San Antonio Youth Programs
Supply events are scheduled for:
- July 31, 4 to 6 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston Youth Programs
- July 31, 4 to 6 p.m. at Randolph Youth Programs
- August 1, 10 a.m. to noon at Lackland Youth Programs
Participating students can receive grade-appropriate supplies and take part in games and activities.
Palo Alto College Resource Fair
Date: Saturday, August 1
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Location: Palo Alto College Performing Arts Center, 1400 W. Villaret Blvd.
The event is expected to offer school supplies, low- or no-cost immunizations, grocery produce bags and family activities.
IDEA Public Schools
IDEA Public Schools has scheduled additional backpack distributions open to students whether or not they attend an IDEA campus:
- July 31, noon to 2 p.m. at IDEA Hidden Meadow
- August 1, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at IDEA Judson
- August 8, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at IDEA Walzem
The first 600 school-aged children at each event are expected to receive a backpack containing supplies.

Sunday, July 26, is the final day of San Antonio Animal Care Services’ “Empty the Shelters” campaign.
Texas Public Radio reported on July 10 that the campaign was scheduled to run from July 6 through July 26 at the municipal shelter near Texas 151 and U.S. 90.
Dog and cat adoptions are available for $25. Adopted animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, with lifetime registration included.

Sunday operating hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with final adoptions beginning approximately 30 minutes before closing.
