More Than 500 St. Mary's Volunteers Give Back Across San Antonio
One of Saturday's brightest community stories came from St. Mary's University.
More than 500 students, employees and alumni volunteered throughout San Antonio on Saturday, completing approximately 2,000 hours of community service as part of the university's annual Continuing the Heritage Day of Service. The tradition has now been held for 30 years.
Volunteers assisted four organizations: Towne Twin Village, Family Service-Presa Community Center, Sleep in Heavenly Peace and St. Stephen's CARE Center.
At Towne Twin Village, volunteers helped improve the community's meditation garden, while other teams supported organizations serving families and residents across San Antonio.
The university has set an even larger goal for the academic year: 10,000 hours of community service. Saturday's effort was expected to put St. Mary's roughly 20% of the way toward that target.
It is the kind of story that often happens away from the biggest headlines but can have a very real impact. Hundreds of people giving a few hours of their time turns into thousands of hours invested directly into the city.
Historic Gunter Hotel Opens Recording Studio Honoring San Antonio's Music History
Downtown San Antonio has a new destination for musicians, and this one comes with almost a century of history built into the walls.
The historic Gunter Hotel has opened Gunter Studio, a professional recording facility created in recognition of legendary blues musician Robert Johnson, who made historic recordings at the hotel in 1936.
The studio is part of the Gunter's recently completed $57 million renovation.
According to the San Antonio Express-News, the facility includes professional recording equipment selected by producer Michael Ramos and acoustician Steve Durr. A professional sound engineer will also be available to assist artists using the studio.
But what makes the project particularly interesting for San Antonio is its educational component.
The studio is expected to serve not only professional musicians but also students and nonprofit organizations, creating opportunities for a younger generation to learn within a space connected to one of the most important chapters in American blues history.
Visitors will even have opportunities to record inside Room 414, where Johnson recorded nearly 90 years ago.
Public tours are planned for August 26, September 2 and September 9 from 6 to 7 p.m.
For a city with deep roots in conjunto, Tejano, blues, country, gospel, rock and hip-hop, the project creates an intriguing bridge between San Antonio's musical history and its future.
San Antonio Public Library Expands Digital Access for Students
A library card in San Antonio can now function almost like a miniature educational technology subscription.
The San Antonio Public Library is offering free portable Wi-Fi hotspot checkouts at 10 library locations, alongside digital tutoring and test-preparation services.
The hotspots are available at the Bazan, Collins Garden, Cortez, Forest Hills, Las Palmas, Memorial, Mission, Pan American, Schaefer and Westfall branches.
Families can check out a hotspot for up to three weeks and potentially renew it if another resident is not waiting for the device.
The pilot program specifically focuses on parts of San Antonio where broadband access remains a challenge. More than 60% of the available hotspots had already been checked out when KSAT reported on the program.
The library also provides 24/7 online tutoring in English and Spanish through Brainfuse for students ranging from kindergarten through graduate school.
Additional online resources include preparation for the ACT, SAT and professional exams in fields such as nursing, health care, firefighting and law enforcement.
The program is a reminder that modern libraries increasingly function as community technology centers, classrooms and career-development hubs in addition to places to borrow books.
Free Drive-Through Flu Vaccination Clinics Coming to Bexar County
Bexar County and University Health are preparing several free vaccination events ahead of the upcoming flu season.
Four free drive-through flu shot clinics will be held across the county during September and October. Residents must register in advance.
The scheduled events are:
- September 12: Precinct 1 satellite office, 3505 Pleasanton Road
- September 19: Freeman Coliseum, 3201 E. Houston Street
- October 3: Gustafson Stadium, 7001 Culebra Road
- October 10: Dub Farris Athletic Complex, 8400 North Loop 1604 W.
Each clinic is scheduled from 8 a.m. until noon.
With locations spread among multiple parts of Bexar County, the strategy is designed to make vaccination accessible without requiring every resident to travel toward downtown or the Medical Center.
Nearly 40 Organizations Join Cattleman Square Homelessness Initiative
On San Antonio's West Side, a major coordinated effort is getting underway around Cattleman Square.
The San Antonio Housing Trust has approved a 28-month Homeless Response Action Plan aimed at addressing homelessness in the historic district west of downtown near Haven for Hope.
More than 160 people experiencing homelessness have been sleeping around abandoned buildings in the area, according to KSAT.
Nearly 40 nonprofit and community organizations are now working together to connect people with housing, medical treatment, legal assistance and other services.
The first six months of the plan will emphasize outreach, relationship-building and identifying the needs of individual residents. Later phases are expected to concentrate on permanent housing and continuing support.
Corazón Ministries, one of the participating organizations, reported that it has already helped 35 people obtain housing.
The effort overlaps with broader redevelopment plans for Cattleman Square, including affordable housing, businesses and future transportation connections associated with VIA's Silver Line.
The challenge will be balancing redevelopment with the needs of people who already live in and around the district.
Northwest Side Dog Park Reopens After Tornado Damage
A small but meaningful sign of recovery has arrived on the Northwest Side.
The Gunn Family Coyote Dog Park at The Rock at La Cantera reopened Friday, more than five weeks after an EF-1 tornado damaged the area on July 15.
Spurs Sports & Entertainment worked with Bexar County and local partners to restore the 7.5-acre public park.
The park attracts approximately 50,000 visitors annually and includes walking trails, dog agility areas, dog-washing stations, seating areas and play spaces. Admission is free.
For residents living around the Northwest Side, reopening a neighborhood gathering place is another tangible milestone in the area's recovery from the storm.
Changes to NIOSA Spark Conversation About Protecting San Antonio Tradition
Few things inspire passionate opinions in San Antonio quite like Fiesta.
Now, proposed changes to A Night in Old San Antonio, better known as NIOSA, have some longtime residents wondering how the event can evolve without losing its identity.
Construction and redevelopment around La Villita are expected to affect major portions of the traditional NIOSA footprint. The Conservation Society of San Antonio expects to lose access to the Villita Assembly Hall and potentially Maverick Plaza, changes that could affect approximately 43% of the event's existing space.
The Assembly Hall is expected to be transformed into a food hall with multiple tenants, a restaurant and new outdoor spaces connected to the River Walk.
NIOSA organizers are evaluating how the event could operate under the new limitations.
The conversation is larger than square footage. For generations of families, NIOSA has become connected to personal memories, local culture and Fiesta itself.
San Antonio is growing rapidly, and the NIOSA debate illustrates a question that appears repeatedly as the city changes: How does San Antonio build what comes next without erasing what made the city distinctive in the first place?
San Antonio Zoo Earns Global Recognition
The San Antonio Zoo is also celebrating another major recognition.
Condé Nast Traveler recently included the attraction among its best zoos in the world, with particular attention given to the zoo's conservation work.
Among the efforts highlighted were the Texas Horned Lizard Reintroduction Project and Project Selva, which works with Indigenous communities in the Amazon region.
The recognition follows major additions at the zoo including Naylor Savanna and Congo Falls, its new gorilla habitat.
For San Antonio, the recognition carries value beyond tourism. Institutions such as the zoo serve as educational destinations for local families while bringing national and international attention to the city.
