San Antonio Morning News: Flood Watch Continues as More Rain Returns, City Prepares for a Wet Friday

SAN ANTONIO, Texas | Friday, October 2, 2026

San Antonio begins Friday under another round of unsettled weather after heavy rain caused flooding and road problems across the region Thursday. Meanwhile, City Council is moving toward a major vote on proposed SAWS rate increases, authorities announced new arrests in a months-old homicide investigation, and the Spurs have unveiled their theme-night schedule for the coming NBA season.

Here’s what San Antonio residents need to know this morning.

🌧️ Flood Watch Continues Through Friday Evening

Weather remains the biggest immediate story across San Antonio and South Central Texas.

The National Weather Service has a Flood Watch in effect for Bexar County and much of South Central Texas through 7 p.m. Friday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue, with additional rainfall generally ranging from 0.5 to 3 inches, although isolated locations could receive totals approaching 6 inches.

At San Antonio International Airport, the NWS reported overcast skies and 74°F early Friday morning, with humidity around 94% and northeast winds near 5 mph. The forecast calls for a high near 81°F, with showers likely and thunderstorms possible through the day.

KSAT meteorologists also reported patchy fog early Friday, which could reduce visibility during the morning commute. Scattered downpours are expected to redevelop into the afternoon, although the overall flooding threat is expected to gradually decrease.

Conditions should slowly improve over the weekend. Rain becomes more scattered Saturday and Sunday before significantly drier weather arrives next week, according to the NWS.

Flooding Already Affecting San Antonio Roads

Thursday's heavy rainfall left multiple San Antonio-area roads flooded or closed, forcing drivers to find alternate routes. KENS 5 reported at least one water rescue as high water affected parts of the city.

Bexar County crews have been monitoring low-water crossings, creeks and drainage systems as additional rainfall moves through the area. Officials continue to advise motorists not to drive into water covering a roadway.

For Friday, low-water crossings deserve particular attention because already-saturated ground means additional heavy downpours can produce flooding faster than they would under normal conditions.

💧 SAWS Rate Increase Heads Toward City Council Vote

Another significant local story centers on San Antonio residents' future water bills.

The San Antonio City Council is scheduled to vote October 8 on a revised SAWS rate plan. The proposal calls for the average residential monthly bill to increase by approximately $3.91 in 2027 and $3.94 in 2028. Rates proposed for 2029 and 2030 would fall within ranges that would be reviewed annually.

SAWS says additional revenue is needed to fund infrastructure improvements. After council members rejected an earlier proposal in June, the utility cut $594 million from its planned capital program, reducing it to approximately $2.6 billion.

The SAWS board is scheduled to meet October 6 and hold a public hearing before City Council considers the proposal October 8.

🚔 Two Women Charged in Southeast Side Homicide Investigation

San Antonio police have made another arrest in connection with the March death of 84-year-old Manuel Gomez Mendez Jr.

Bexar County Jail records cited by KSAT show Leidy Guadalupe Hernandez, 43, and Ulani Mable Nunes, 23, have been charged with capital murder and aggravated robbery. Hernandez was taken into custody Thursday, while Nunes had previously been arrested.

Police said investigators used surveillance footage, phone records and other evidence to connect the suspects to Mendez's home and the location where his body was discovered on March 28. The allegations remain subject to the court process.

🏈 San Antonio Street to Honor Super Bowl Champion Willie Mitchell

San Antonio City Council has approved renaming Splashtown Drive to Willie Mitchell Drive, honoring the San Antonio native and former professional football player.

Mitchell attended Wheatley High School on the East Side before playing professionally with the Kansas City Chiefs. He appeared in the first AFL-NFL World Championship Game and was part of the Chiefs team that won Super Bowl IV.

The former Splashtown water park closed in 2021, and the surrounding property has since been redeveloped.

The city says the new street name is intended to recognize Mitchell's connection to the East Side and his accomplishments in professional football.

🏀 Spurs Unveil 2026-27 Theme Nights

The San Antonio Spurs are also gearing up for basketball season.

The team announced its 2026-27 regular-season theme-night schedule, including Military Appreciation, Halloween, Hispanic Heritage, Black Heritage, Fiesta, Pride and several special promotional nights.

The Spurs' home opener is scheduled for October 20 against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Frost Bank Center.

Among the promotions are a Hello Kitty Kids Game on January 24, multiple Fiesta Nights and Military Appreciation Night on March 9.

Basketball season is nearly back in the Alamo City. 🏀

What San Antonio Should Watch Today

Friday's weather is the immediate priority. The Flood Watch remains active through the evening, and isolated heavy downpours could still create dangerous conditions at low-water crossings even if rain becomes more scattered later in the day.

Beyond the weather, the upcoming SAWS vote could have a direct financial impact on local households, while the Spurs' approaching home opener signals the start of another major sports season in San Antonio.

For now, keep the umbrella close and the low-water crossings far away. South Texas weather has apparently decided October needed a dramatic opening scene. 🌧️
