With the FIFA World Cup now complete, Major League Baseball owns Tuesday night’s viewing schedule. Fourteen games are set across the country as teams evaluate their postseason chances ahead of the August 3 trade deadline.
Away from the diamond, the Miami Dolphins have secured an important piece of their defense, the WNBA is preparing for All-Star Weekend amid explosive business growth, and Remco Evenepoel delivered a commanding performance at the Tour de France.
MLB Trade Deadline Begins to Reshape the League
The Major League Baseball trade deadline is less than two weeks away, and several teams are rapidly reconsidering whether they should buy, sell or attempt something in between.
The Boston Red Sox have transformed themselves from an apparent seller into a potential aggressive buyer. A 14-game winning streak and a 19-2 record over their previous 21 games pushed Boston back into serious American League contention. MLB.com identified second base and catcher as possible areas the team could strengthen.
Boston’s rise creates additional intrigue around Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman. The Orioles are reportedly listening to offers, although they are not actively rushing to trade the former No. 1 overall draft pick. Baltimore could seek controllable major-league pitching rather than a conventional package of prospects.
The Toronto Blue Jays face a much less comfortable decision. Toronto entered Tuesday 5½ games behind the final American League wild-card position after losing three of four games following the All-Star break. Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber and Daulton Varsho could become valuable trade pieces should Toronto decide to sell.
The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly searching for a reliable back-end starting pitcher. Philadelphia has received a 7.33 ERA from its fifth rotation position and has struggled badly in games not started by its established top four pitchers.
The trade market is not humming quietly anymore. It is warming up like a stadium speaker before the first pitch.
Mets Activate Luis Robert Jr. as His Future Remains Uncertain
The New York Mets activated outfielder Luis Robert Jr. from the injured list before opening their series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Robert had been sidelined since April 27 because of a lumbar spine disc herniation. He was batting .224 with two home runs and eight RBIs over 24 games before the injury. The Mets acquired him from the Chicago White Sox in January.
New York entered the week with one of the National League’s poorest records, making Robert a possible trade candidate before the deadline. His return gives the Mets a chance to evaluate both his health and his potential value to another team.
Dolphins Reward Jordyn Brooks With Major Extension
The Miami Dolphins reached a three-year, $51.3 million contract extension with linebacker Jordyn Brooks. The agreement reportedly contains $35 million in guaranteed money and keeps Brooks under contract through the 2029 season.
Brooks has accumulated 326 tackles, including 24 tackles for loss, and 6½ sacks during his first 34 games with Miami. He earned the first All-Pro selection of his career in 2025.
Miami’s new leadership has identified Brooks, running back De’Von Achane and center Aaron Brewer as foundational players. All three have now received extensions as the Dolphins attempt to construct a more stable roster around their new coaching and management structure.
WNBA Growth Meets a Complicated All-Star Weekend
The WNBA is preparing for its July 25 All-Star Game in Chicago while experiencing what Commissioner Cathy Engelbert describes as a period of “hypergrowth.”
The league’s new collective bargaining agreement created its first group of players earning million-dollar salaries. The WNBA has also secured a media-rights package valued at more than $3 billion and plans to expand to 18 teams by 2030.
That financial growth has not eliminated tension between league leadership and players. Engelbert planned to meet with members of the players’ union Tuesday to discuss online harassment, threats and growing concerns about player safety.
Cleveland’s future WNBA franchise also announced that Progressive Insurance will purchase both available jersey sponsorship positions. It will be the first time one company has held both jersey-patch placements for a WNBA team. The Cleveland franchise begins play in May 2028 and has already received more than 9,000 season-ticket deposits.
There are no WNBA games scheduled Tuesday night. League play resumes Wednesday, July 22, before All-Star festivities take center stage in Chicago.
Evenepoel Wins Tour de France Stage 16
Remco Evenepoel won Tuesday’s individual time trial between Évian-les-Bains and Thonon-les-Bains, finishing the 26.1-kilometer course in 32 minutes and 19 seconds.
Tadej Pogačar retained the yellow jersey and holds a four-minute, 32-second advantage over Evenepoel in the general classification. Isaac Del Toro sits third, six minutes and 51 seconds behind Pogačar.
The race continues Wednesday with Stage 17 from Chambéry to Voiron before returning to the mountains later in the week.
