Sports Today: MLB Day Games, WNBA Returns and MLS All-Stars Face Liga MX

Wednesday’s sports schedule offers an all-day relay race for fans.
Major League Baseball begins before noon Central Time and continues into the night. The WNBA has two games following its All-Star break, college alumni will compete for a championship in The Basketball Tournament, and the best players from Major League Soccer and Liga MX will meet in Charlotte.
Before today’s games begin, Tuesday produced several close baseball finishes, a Detroit shutout and three WNBA games in which the winning team reached at least 100 points.
Tuesday Night’s Major Scores
Major League Baseball
The Detroit Tigers delivered Tuesday’s most one-sided MLB result, defeating the Baltimore Orioles 14-0.
Several other games went down to the wire. Arizona beat Pittsburgh 8-7 in 12 innings, Seattle edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-6, San Diego defeated Colorado 8-7 and the Athletics held off Boston 4-3.
The Cincinnati and Cleveland doubleheader ended in a split. Cleveland won the first game 6-5 before Cincinnati answered with a 2-0 victory in the second.

Seattle’s 7-6 win over the Dodgers closed one of the evening’s most prominent series with another narrow result.
WNBA
The Minnesota Lynx defeated the Toronto Tempo 100-93, while the Indiana Fever beat the Seattle Storm 105-95.
The New York Liberty outlasted the Los Angeles Sparks 113-109, and the Las Vegas Aces defeated the Portland Fire 98-83.
The high-scoring Liberty-Sparks game stood out, but the results also matter because teams have entered the second half of the season with the August 2 trade deadline approaching. The WNBA’s official calendar places that deadline at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
MLB Games Begin Before Noon
Wednesday’s MLB schedule begins at 11:10 a.m. CT, when Philadelphia visits Miami.
Arizona and Pittsburgh follow at 11:35 a.m. CT, while Toronto-Washington, Atlanta-New York and Baltimore-Detroit begin shortly after noon.
The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets are scheduled to play a doubleheader, with games at 12:10 p.m. CT and 6:10 p.m. CT.

WNBA Returns With Two Games
The WNBA’s Wednesday schedule begins in Arlington, Texas, where the Atlanta Dream visit the Dallas Wings at 7:00 p.m. CT.
Dallas enters the matchup with an 18-9 record, while Atlanta is 16-10. The Wings said the game at College Park Center is sold out.
The Wings carried a six-game winning streak into the break, making the matchup a test of whether Dallas can immediately recover its rhythm after several days without a regular-season game.
The second WNBA game sends the Golden State Valkyries to Phoenix to face the Mercury at 9:00 p.m. CT.
Golden State enters at 19-8 and has won nine of its past 10 games. Phoenix is 10-18 but won twice before the All-Star break.
Golden State defeated Phoenix 87-81 in their June 9 meeting, giving the Mercury an opportunity to answer on their home floor.
Kentucky and Kansas Alumni Play for a TBT Title
Kentucky alumni team La Familia will host Kansas alumni team JHX Hoops in The Basketball Tournament’s Alumni Championship at 6:00 p.m. CT at Historic Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, Kentucky.
The game is scheduled to air on FS1.
La Familia reached the championship by overcoming a nine-point second-half deficit and defeating Syracuse alumni team Boeheim’s Army 70-66.
JHX Hoops advanced with a 64-59 victory over Wichita State alumni team AfterShocks. Former Kansas guard Frank Mason III helped lead the team into the championship matchup.
The winner will take more than school pride. TBT describes the alumni competition as carrying a $2 million winner-take-all prize.
MLS All-Stars Meet Liga MX in Charlotte
The evening’s largest soccer event begins at 7:00 p.m. CT, when the MLS All-Stars face the Liga MX All-Stars at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The game will stream on Apple TV.
The match brings together leading players from the top professional leagues in the United States, Canada and Mexico. MLS selected a 29-player roster for the game.
The All-Star format gives fans a collection of individual stars, but the challenge is whether a roster assembled for one night can create enough chemistry to produce an organized game. That uncertainty is part of the attraction. It is soccer with regional pride, unfamiliar combinations and very little time for anyone to settle in.
USA Swimming Championships Continue
The Toyota National Championships also continue Wednesday in Irvine, California.
USA Swimming lists preliminary competition beginning at 11:00 a.m. CT and the finals session beginning at 8:00 p.m. CT. The national meet runs through Saturday, August 1.
Although this is not a traditional team game, it is one of the day’s more important U.S. sporting events because national championship results can help identify athletes moving toward future international competition.
Games to Watch
Best daytime matchup: Arizona at Pittsburgh
Tuesday’s game required 12 innings before Arizona escaped with an 8-7 victory. The teams return less than a day later, which puts bullpen depth and recovery under the microscope.
Best WNBA matchup: Atlanta at Dallas
Dallas has one of the league’s strongest records and enters with momentum, while Atlanta remains firmly in the postseason race. A sold-out arena should add a playoff-style edge to the first game back.
Best late game: Seattle at Los Angeles Dodgers
Seattle’s 7-6 victory Tuesday set up another meeting between two clubs with postseason expectations. It also owns the latest scheduled MLB start of the night at 9:10 p.m. CT.
Best special event: MLS versus Liga MX
The MLS All-Star Game is not part of the regular-season standings, but it offers a rare one-night comparison between stars from neighboring leagues with a growing competitive relationship.
