U.S. Military Uses High-Energy Laser to Shoot Down Three Cartel-Linked Drones Near Texas Border

A scene that once sounded like science fiction has become part of real-world border security.

The U.S. military says it used a high-energy laser system to destroy three drones linked to Mexican cartel activity near the U.S.-Mexico border, marking a striking example of advanced directed-energy technology being used during domestic border operations.

The engagements occurred during the late-night hours of August 25 and 26 in the Rio Grande Valley region of South Texas, according to U.S. Northern Command and Joint Task Force-Southern Border. Military personnel used the Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser, or AMP-HEL, to engage the unmanned aircraft.

Officials said the drones were considered hostile because they were being used in direct support of activities that posed a physical threat to U.S. military personnel and Customs and Border Protection agents.

The operation represents a significant development in a rapidly changing security environment where relatively inexpensive commercial drones can be used for surveillance, smuggling and potentially attacks.

Why the Military Targeted the Drones

U.S. officials say criminal organizations operating near the border are increasingly using unmanned aircraft.

Maj. Gen. Curtis Taylor, commander of Joint Task Force-Southern Border, said cartel networks have been using drones to assist human-smuggling operations and conduct surveillance on U.S. military personnel and law-enforcement officers.

The military did not publicly identify which cartel or cartels were believed to control the three aircraft.

Officials also have not released specific information describing exactly what the drones were doing immediately before they were targeted.

That distinction is important. While the military has characterized the aircraft as hostile and associated them with cartel activity, many operational details remain classified or undisclosed.

One Major Question Remains: Where Were They Shot Down?

Perhaps the biggest unanswered question involves the precise location of the engagements.

U.S. officials have not disclosed whether the drones were destroyed over American or Mexican territory.

When CBS News asked U.S. Northern Command about the location, a spokesperson said the engagements were coordinated with partners operating along the border, but declined to provide additional details because of operational security and continuing counter-cartel operations.

The distinction could have serious diplomatic implications.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has previously warned that unilateral American military operations conducted on Mexican territory would constitute a serious violation of Mexico's sovereignty.

For now, U.S. officials have stopped short of saying where the laser beams crossed the sky.

What Is a High-Energy Laser Weapon?

Unlike a conventional missile or gun, a high-energy laser directs concentrated energy toward a target.

The military is experimenting with these systems partly because modern warfare is increasingly being shaped by small, inexpensive drones.

Launching an expensive missile every time a relatively cheap drone approaches can create an enormous cost imbalance.

Directed-energy weapons offer another possibility: detect the drone, track it and concentrate energy on the aircraft until critical components are damaged.

The Army recently described high-energy lasers and high-power microwave systems as promising counter-drone technologies. Military officials say the science behind defeating drones with directed energy has already been demonstrated, but the Pentagon is still studying how such systems can be operated reliably in real-world environments without interfering with normal base operations or civilian aviation.

The border may now be emerging as one of those real-world testing grounds.

This Technology Has Already Caused Problems in Texas

The deployment has not been without controversy.

In February 2026, a laser-based U.S. military counter-drone system accidentally shot down a Customs and Border Protection drone near Fort Hancock, Texas.

Congressional aides told Reuters that the aircraft had been mistaken for a threatening drone.

The incident led to additional Federal Aviation Administration restrictions around the area and raised concerns about coordination between military operators, CBP and civilian aviation authorities.

Earlier that month, concerns surrounding another laser-based counter-drone deployment contributed to an abrupt shutdown of air traffic around El Paso International Airport that lasted roughly eight hours before restrictions were lifted.

Those incidents demonstrate one of the central challenges surrounding directed-energy weapons.

The technology may be capable of destroying a drone, but operators must also be extraordinarily certain they are targeting the right aircraft.

Cartel Drone Use Is Becoming a Bigger Security Concern

Commercial drones have transformed everything from photography and agriculture to filmmaking and package delivery.

Criminal organizations noticed the same technology.

U.S. security officials say cartels have adapted commercially available drones to monitor trafficking routes, transport drug packages and observe law-enforcement activity near the border.

The threat is more serious deeper inside Mexico.

Cartels operating there have used drones carrying explosives in deadly attacks, according to Reuters.

That evolution presents an uncomfortable new security reality.

A sophisticated aerial capability no longer necessarily requires a military aircraft costing millions of dollars.

A commercially available drone equipped with cameras, communications equipment or an explosive payload can potentially perform missions that once required far more sophisticated technology.

That means the contest along the border is increasingly technological.

Authorities have drones.

Cartels have drones.

And now the U.S. military has lasers designed to take them out.

Thousands of U.S. Troops Are Supporting the Border Mission

Joint Task Force-Southern Border says approximately 8,000 service members are currently deployed in support of its border mission.

Their responsibilities include increasing surveillance and situational awareness, assisting federal law-enforcement agencies and helping protect U.S. territorial integrity.

Since the task force was established in 2025, officials say personnel have conducted tens of thousands of detection and monitoring patrols along with thousands of observation flights.

The deployment of high-energy laser systems adds another layer to that mission.

More Than a Border Story

The destruction of three drones may seem like a small tactical event.

Its larger implications are much bigger.

The incident shows how quickly inexpensive drone technology is changing security operations inside the United States.

It also raises difficult questions.

How should authorities distinguish criminal drones from civilian, commercial and government aircraft?

What level of threat justifies destroying an unmanned aircraft?

How can laser systems operate safely near civilian aviation?

And what happens if future engagements occur across an international border?

Those questions will become increasingly important as drones become cheaper, more autonomous and more capable.

The U.S. military is already preparing for that future.

On the Texas border this week, part of that future arrived early.

Three drones went into the night sky.

A high-energy laser system was waiting for them.
