Hurricane Lala Bears Down on Hawaii’s Big Island
Hurricane Lala strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane Saturday as it approached Hawaii’s Big Island, bringing the threat of damaging winds, severe flooding and mudslides.
The storm reached maximum sustained winds of around 75 mph, according to the Associated Press. Forecasters warned that some higher elevations on the Big Island could receive as much as 25 inches of rain.
A direct hurricane landfall on the Big Island would be exceptionally rare. Historical research cited by the AP indicates the island has not experienced one since 1871.
Warnings have also been issued across other Hawaiian islands as the large storm spreads wind and rain across the state.
Five People Shot Near Virginia State University
Police are investigating a shooting outside residence halls at Virginia State University that left five people injured early Saturday.
Chesterfield County Police said one of the victims was in critical condition. Authorities were continuing their investigation Saturday, and Reuters reported that the shooting happened outside university residence halls.
The incident comes as another community is dealing with the aftermath of deadly violence in Michigan.
Five Killed in Northern Michigan Shooting
A shooting in northern Michigan left five people dead, while another victim remained hospitalized in critical condition.
Michigan State Police said the 39-year-old suspect was later found dead following a large-scale search.
The shootings occurred Friday, with authorities continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
U.S. Measles Cases Reach Highest Level in Decades

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 2,566 confirmed measles cases in the United States in 2026 as of August 13, surpassing the total reported during all of 2025.

Luigi Mangione Case Moves Toward Sentencing
Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty in federal court to two stalking charges connected to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione admitted in court Friday that he fatally shot Thompson. He now faces the possibility of life in federal prison, with sentencing scheduled for December 18.
He also faces New York state charges, although his attorneys are attempting to have those charges dismissed following the federal plea.
