Trump Administration Takes Voter Citizenship Database Fight to Supreme Court

The Trump administration has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to allow the federal government to use an expanded version of the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements database, known as SAVE, to assist states checking the citizenship status of people on voter rolls.
A federal judge previously blocked the administration's revised system. Opponents argue that inaccurate citizenship information could result in eligible American citizens, including naturalized citizens, being improperly flagged or removed from voter rolls.
The administration argues the system is an important tool for election integrity and citizenship verification.
The dispute now carries even greater significance because the November 3 midterm elections are approaching rapidly.
Federal Appeals Court Considers New Abortion Pill Restrictions
A federal appeals court is also considering another case with major national consequences.
The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is reviewing a challenge involving prescribing and distribution rules for mifepristone, a medication commonly used as part of medication abortions in the United States.
The lawsuit is part of the continuing legal battle over abortion access following the Supreme Court's 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade.
The case focuses in part on FDA rules that have made the medication available through methods including telehealth and mail delivery.

Investigators Examine Final Seconds Before Deadly Miami Cargo Plane Crash
Federal investigators are examining new flight data from the Amazon Prime Air cargo plane that crashed after overrunning a runway at Miami International Airport, killing five people on the ground.
The Boeing 767, operated by 21 Air, was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it traveled roughly 1,300 feet beyond the end of the runway and struck vehicles near the airport.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, flight data indicates the pilots may have briefly attempted to abort the landing after touchdown before abandoning the maneuver and trying to stop the aircraft.
Investigators also found that the aircraft's thrust reversers were not deployed during the landing sequence.
The NTSB has recovered both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder and is continuing interviews and evidence analysis.
The five people killed were traveling in a vehicle used by an aircraft cleaning crew. Several additional people were injured.
Investigators have not determined the probable cause, and the NTSB's investigation remains ongoing.
TSA Opens Airport Gates to Some People Without Plane Tickets
One of the day's more unusual travel stories marks a significant shift in post-9/11 airport culture.
The Transportation Security Administration has introduced Gateside by TSA PreCheck, allowing eligible people without airline tickets to pass through security and enter gate areas at participating airports.
The program is initially available at 13 U.S. airports, including Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Indianapolis International Airport, San Diego International Airport and Salt Lake City International Airport.
Eligible TSA PreCheck members can apply online approximately one to three days before their planned airport visit. Approval allows them to pass through security and meet arriving family members at the gate, accompany departing travelers farther into the airport or meet someone during a layover.
The program represents a partial return to the airport experience many Americans remember from before September 11, 2001, when friends and family could routinely accompany passengers to departure gates.
Security screening and approval remain required under the new program.
Rhode Island Holds Closely Watched Governor's Primary
Voters in Rhode Island are also heading to the polls Wednesday in a closely watched Democratic gubernatorial primary.
Governor Dan McKee faces former CVS executive Helena Foulkes in a rematch of their tight 2022 primary contest.
A major issue in the race has been the troubled Washington Bridge project in Providence, where infrastructure problems and delays have become a significant political liability.
Republicans are also selecting their nominee for governor.
