U.S. Sports Morning: Panthers Win NFL Opener, WNBA Delivers Overtime Drama and MLB Loads Up Friday Night

Friday, August 7, 2026 | Morning Sports Report

The sports calendar is waking up fast this Friday. The NFL returned Thursday night with the Hall of Fame Game, the WNBA produced one of the wildest finishes of the season, Major League Baseball heads into a full Friday slate after several explosive scores, and major developments involving Stefon Diggs and USA Basketball are adding even more juice to the weekend.

NFL Returns With Panthers-Cardinals Thriller

Carolina opened the NFL preseason by defeating Arizona 33-30 in Thursday night's Hall of Fame Game. It was the league's first preseason game of 2026 and the opening act before the full preseason schedule begins next week.

There are no NFL games scheduled Friday. Preseason Week 1 begins Thursday, August 13, with Arizona visiting Las Vegas, followed by a much larger schedule through the weekend.

Stefon Diggs Heads to Washington

One of the biggest NFL personnel moves this week has veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs joining the Washington Commanders.

The 32-year-old agreed to a deal for the 2026 season that reportedly could pay him as much as $12 million. Diggs caught 99 passes for 1,123 yards and five touchdowns across 21 games, including the playoffs, with New England last season. Washington is betting that his experience can provide quarterback Jayden Daniels with another established target alongside Terry McLaurin.

WNBA: Chelsea Gray Breaks Indiana's Heart

Thursday night's Las Vegas-Indiana matchup supplied the night's biggest basketball drama.

Chelsea Gray hit two buzzer-beating 3-pointers, one to force overtime and another to give the defending champion Las Vegas Aces an 86-84 overtime victory over Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. Clark missed two late free throws in regulation and finished the game reflecting on eight turnovers in the difficult loss.

Elsewhere, the Los Angeles Sparks beat Minnesota 89-82, snapping the Lynx's 10-game winning streak, while Portland defeated Toronto 97-83.

The Tigers' 11-0 shutout of Seattle, Atlanta's 11-3 win over Miami, the Mets' 13-run eruption in Cleveland and Boston's 13-inning slugfest against the White Sox were among the loudest MLB results of the night.

MLB Friday: Braves-Yankees Highlights a Full Slate

Baseball takes center stage Friday with 15 games scheduled.

One of the most interesting matchups sends Atlanta into Yankee Stadium to face New York. The Braves and Yankees are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET, with Max Fried lined up for New York. Other notable games include Toronto at Philadelphia, the Cubs at Kansas City, Houston at San Diego, the Dodgers at Arizona and Tampa Bay at Seattle.

The Dodgers-Diamondbacks matchup carries extra intrigue with Roki Sasaki scheduled against Merrill Kelly, while Zack Wheeler is lined up for Philadelphia against Toronto.

WNBA Has Three More Games Tonight

Women's basketball keeps rolling Friday with three games, all in the evening: MatchupTime ETPhoenix Mercury at Connecticut Sun7:30 p.m.Atlanta Dream at Washington Mystics7:30 p.m.Golden State Valkyries at Dallas Wings9:30 p.m.

Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers Make Team USA

The next era of USA Basketball is taking shape.

Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers have all been named to the U.S. women's national team and are set to make their senior World Cup debuts next month.

They will join a powerhouse roster featuring A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, Kahleah Copper and Kelsey Plum as the Americans pursue a fifth consecutive FIBA Women's World Cup championship.

The World Cup runs September 4-13 in Berlin, with Team USA facing China, Italy and the Czech Republic in pool play.

That's a nasty roster. Basketball Avengers assembling. 🏀

Baseball's Trade Deadline Changes the Championship Race

Friday's MLB games are also giving fans their first extended look at dramatically reshaped rosters following Monday's trade deadline.

Among the blockbuster moves, Boston acquired Adley Rutschman, Philadelphia landed Luis Arraez, Houston added Daulton Varsho, the Cubs acquired pitcher Clay Holmes, and San Diego added Robbie Ray and Casey Mize.

The Dodgers made perhaps the biggest splash by adding two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal while chasing a third consecutive World Series championship.

That turns August baseball into more than a standings race. Several contenders basically walked into the trade deadline garage and came back out with a different engine.

NASCAR Changes Stage-Racing Procedure Before Iowa

NASCAR is introducing a rule adjustment beginning this weekend at Iowa Speedway.

If a natural caution occurs with 10 or fewer laps remaining in a stage, the stage will now be considered complete at the time of the caution, with that same caution period serving as the scheduled stage break. NASCAR says the change is intended to reduce time spent running under caution.

The O'Reilly Auto Parts Series races Saturday at 5 p.m. ET, while Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series Iowa Corn 350 is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET.

PGA Tour Continues at the Wyndham Championship

The Wyndham Championship continues Friday at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The tournament carries an $8.5 million purse and sits immediately before the FedExCup postseason on the 2026 PGA Tour calendar, making this weekend especially important for players near the playoff cutoff.

What to Watch Tonight

The strongest Friday-night viewing window is baseball-heavy. Braves-Yankees, Blue Jays-Phillies, Dodgers-Diamondbacks, Astros-Padres and Rays-Mariners give MLB several compelling matchups stretching from early evening into the West Coast night.

The WNBA also has three games following Thursday's overtime thriller, and the bigger storyline around women's basketball now extends beyond the league itself with the new Team USA roster.

Meanwhile, NFL fans get a brief Friday break before preseason football expands next week.

Refocused Sports Perspective

This is one of those sneaky-good sports weekends.

The NFL has officially cracked the door open. MLB's contenders are revealing what their trade-deadline upgrades actually look like on the field. The WNBA is delivering both dramatic games and major national-team storylines. NASCAR has Iowa on deck, and golf is approaching its postseason.

August sometimes gets treated like the hallway between summer and football season.

Not this year.

The hallway has a scoreboard. 😅🏈⚾🏀
