Minnesota remains the championship pace-setter, but Las Vegas and Golden State are applying pressure near the top. Phoenix is betting on a blockbuster trade to revive its postseason hopes, while Cleveland has officially introduced the identity of the franchise that will join the league in 2028.
Meanwhile, a full slate of games begins Wednesday night before a nationally televised weekend packed with playoff-level matchups.
Cleveland’s New WNBA Team Will Be Called the Sirens
Cleveland’s incoming WNBA franchise officially unveiled its name and visual identity Tuesday: the Cleveland Sirens.
The expansion team will begin playing in 2028 at Rocket Arena, returning professional women’s basketball to Cleveland for the first time since the Cleveland Rockers ceased operations following the 2003 season.
The Sirens’ identity draws from Cleveland’s relationship with Lake Erie. The team’s logo features five flowing waves representing both the five players on a basketball court and the five Great Lakes.
The franchise has reportedly collected approximately 9,000 initial season-ticket deposits and held more than 40 community events as it prepares for its debut. Cleveland will become the WNBA’s 16th franchise, followed by Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia in 2030.
Las Vegas Sends Another Warning to the League
The Las Vegas Aces delivered one of the week’s loudest statements by defeating the Atlanta Dream 109-87 Monday night.
Jackie Young recorded a triple-double in the victory, while Las Vegas continued building momentum behind another dominant stretch from A’ja Wilson.
Wilson was named Western Conference Player of the Week after averaging a league-leading 32.3 points per game from July 28 through August 2. It was the 31st Player of the Week award of her career.
Las Vegas now enters a brutal three-game stretch against Indiana, Minnesota and New York. That run should provide a clearer answer about whether the Aces are ready to chase another championship or are simply enjoying a hot midsummer run.
Minnesota Still Controls the Championship Race
The WNBA’s latest official power rankings placed the Minnesota Lynx at No. 1 with a 25-6 record through games played August 2.
Minnesota had won 10 consecutive games, its longest winning streak in a decade. During that run, Kayla McBride averaged 22.7 points, while rookie Olivia Miles averaged 22.3 points and 6.1 assists.
The Golden State Valkyries were ranked second, followed by Las Vegas, Indiana and Atlanta. Golden State strengthened its position Tuesday by defeating the Toronto Tempo 92-82.
The real traffic jam begins beneath Minnesota. Only a few games separated Las Vegas, Golden State, Indiana, Atlanta, Dallas, Washington and New York in the chase for playoff positioning and first-round home-court advantage.
That congestion makes every head-to-head meeting feel heavier. One strong week could move a team toward the top four. One cold stretch could push the same team dangerously close to the playoff line.
Kelsey Plum Trade Gives Phoenix a New Direction
The biggest move of the WNBA trade deadline sent five-time All-Star guard Kelsey Plum from the Los Angeles Sparks to the Phoenix Mercury.
Los Angeles received Monique Akoa Makani, a 2027 first-round draft pick and a 2028 second-round selection.
Plum had averaged career highs of 23.9 points and 6.4 assists across 12 appearances, but she had not played since June 21 because of ankle and lower-leg injuries.
Phoenix is outside the playoff field and needs more than a recognizable name. The real question is when Plum will be healthy enough to play and whether the Mercury can build enough chemistry before the regular season ends.
For Los Angeles, the deal signals a greater focus on future assets while the Sparks continue trying to remain within reach of the postseason.
Toronto Adds Rebounding Help With Aneesah Morrow
The Toronto Tempo addressed one of their most obvious weaknesses by acquiring forward Aneesah Morrow from the Connecticut Sun.
Toronto sent Connecticut a 2028 second-round pick and the rights to Maria Kliundikova.
Morrow was averaging 11.6 points and 8.9 rebounds for the Sun. Her rebounding should immediately help a Toronto team that entered the transaction ranked last in the league in rebounding percentage.
The Tempo are struggling through a losing streak, but Morrow gives the expansion franchise a young interior player who could become part of its longer-term foundation.
