Update: Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has restored power to the terminal as of 8 a.m. TSA checkpoints are open, but airport roadways are still closed.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is without power this morning as travelers out of Austin scrambled in the dark at the Barbara Jordan Terminal. As of 5 a.m., when the lights went out, all flights have been delayed.

Travelers described a dark terminal and heavy traffic around the airport. Roads like SH 71 and US 183 were jammed and roadways into AUS remained closed. Del Valle ISD said that buses would be impacted by nearby closures and traffic, and to expect delays.

AUS spokesperson Sam Haynes did not have an update as of 7:30 a.m. Wednesday but provided a statement to MySA.

“AUS experienced a power outage this morning just before 5 a.m. Austin Energy crews are on-site and working to restore power, but do not have an ETA for restoration at this time. Airlines are holding flights until power can be restored and roadways into the airport are closed. Passengers with flights today can expect delays. We are currently asking passengers not to head to the airport until normal operations have resumed.”

It has been a fraught year for the rapidly growing airport. Earlier this spring, massive delays and fuel shortages caused panic among travelers, and controversy over AUS expansion left some residents dismayed.
